Pony Wars 2018: Baseline Blowout

If you haven’t heard of Horsepower Wars’ Pony Wars battle, get up to speed now. The head-to-head showdown between a 2017 Mustang GT and 2017 Camaro SS is heating up – and the battle is just getting started.

Here’s how Pony Wars works: Two teams compete against each other in an effort to settle the Pony Wars – doing battle on the chassis dyno, road course, and dragstrip. First, the cars are given baseline tests, using their stock set ups. Next, the teams are given $5,000 to modify the cars and the tests are run again, but this time for points. Finally, the teams are given $15,000 for modifications and one last chance to rack up points. The team with the most points wins.

Two episodes in, Pony Wars has completed the baseline tests and there was definitely one clear winner.
Before the teams start making modifications, Pony Wars needed to give the Mustang and Camaro baseline tests to determine where each vehicle is starting from. All rounds of the Pony Wars battle will have three tests: chassis dyno, drag strip and road course.

On the chassis, the Camaro dominated the Mustang with 4408.24 horsepower and 425.47 lb-ft versus 356.27 horsepower and 357.23 lb-ft of torque. But next it was time to get the cars out on the drag strip at Auto Club Raceway. in Fontana, CA.

Both cars were outfitted with Mickey Thompson ET Street S/S.tires to ensure the test results wouldn’t be skewed by available traction.

“Needless to say, they were more than capable of handling what we threw at them in stock form,” reported the Pony Wars team.

So how did the two cars perform on the strip? The Camaro laid down a blistering 12.157 at 113.07 mph, while the Mustang’s best pass of the day was 12.95 at 109.1 mph.

And while both cars running 12s right off the factory showroom is impressive, it’s still Camaro: 2, Mustang: 0.

The final baseline test was the roadway test at Buttonwillow Raceway., and things got interesting. But when it was all said and done, the Camaro had a best time of 2:09.234, while the Mustang’s best time was 2:10.856.

Camaro: 3, Mustang: 0.

The next episode of Pony Wars launches Wednesday at www.horsepowerwars.com. Don’t miss a second of the action as the two teams use the results and data from the baseline tests to modify the stock cars with a $5,000 budget. Will the Mustang make a comeback? Or is this battle the Camaro’s to lose?

We can't wait to find out!
